RESEARCH INTERESTS:

I am an experienced laboratory, translational, and clinical investigator who has worked to move insights in cancer biology from the bench to the clinic and the community, particularly in the field of breast cancer. Our work focused on determinants of hormone response and resistance in preclinical models of human breast cancer with a special emphasis on the role of epigenetic regulation as well as the potential role for epigenetically targeted therapies in breast cancer. This research has been supported by a variety of NIH (R01, U01), Department of Defense, and foundation grants (e.g. Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 1998) I have played a leadership role in early phase clinical trials of novel therapeutics as well as the conduct of large national and international clinical trials that have helped to establish standards of care for women with breast cancer. I am a past Chair of the ECOG Breast Committee for five years and Co-chair of the NCI Breast Care Steering Committee from 2010 – 2016. I have been a Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Highly Cited investigator and am an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in recognition of my contributions.

I served as leader of the Breast Cancer Program at Johns Hopkins for many years and was the founding director of the Hopkins Breast Cancer SPORE (NIH P50 CA88843). From 2009-2016 I was the Director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, one of the nation’s NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (PI of NIH P30 CA047904). I have also served as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2007-8 and President of the American Association for Cancer Research in 2016-7. I served as a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Subcommittee A Cancer Centers and am currently a member of the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors and Clinical Trials and Translational Research Advisory Committee. In addition, I have been a member and/or chair of the external advisory boards for 10 NCI-designated cancer centers as well as the scientific advisory boards for four national cancer charities.
