RESEARCH INTERESTS:
During his 6 year tenure, Dr. DePinho conceived and launched the Moon Shots Program, a goal-oriented comprehensive effort designed to accelerate declines in cancer incidence and mortality in the nation and world. This initiative involving nearly 2,000 faculty and staff already has yielded practice-changing advances in a number of cancers. Dr. DePinho also dramatically enhanced MD Anderson’s research and graduate programs and recruited many world class faculty including a 5-fold increase in National Academy Members. He expanded MD Anderson’s network to 34 institutions in 24 countries, reaching one-third of the human population.
An author of over 400 articles, books and chapters, his own research program has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of cancer, aging and degenerative disorders, and the translation of such knowledge has led to clinical advances. His most celebrated discoveries include elucidation of the core molecular pathway for aging, determination of the basis for the intimate link between advancing age and increased cancer incidence and demonstration that aging itself can be reversed. In addition to his research effort, he founded several private and publicly traded biotechnology companies and served as an advisor or director for AACR, NIH’s TCGA and MMHCC, Vatican, as well as several biotech and large biopharma companies focused on oncology. His companies have created new investigational drugs and diagnostics for the benefit of cancer patients. He is chairman and co-founder of a non-profit, Unite to Prevent Cancer (now OPA Health) whose mission is to make disease prevention a reality for youth and families in last mile communities, particularly for the underserved.
